Address our
Housing Needs

Expand Affordable and
Attainable Housing
My vision is to ensure North Cowichan remains a community where people of all ages and incomes can afford to live. By increasing the range of housing options, including the supply of affordable and attainable housing, we can help young families stay here, support seniors who want to age in place, and provide stable housing for those who need it most. My priorities are to:
-
Complete, in partnership with the Community Land Trust Foundation of BC, the construction of 92 co-op homes, including townhouses and apartments, on municipal land on Sherman Road.
-
Put North Cowichan's Affordable Housing Policy and Implementation Plan into action, supporting new housing projects and working with housing providers, non-profit organizations and other partners to increase the supply of affordable and attainable homes.
-
Advocate for greater provincial and federal investment in affordable housing projects throughout North Cowichan.
-
Encourage a broader range of housing options through thoughtful land-use policies, including density bonusing and appropriate infill development.
-
Support complete communities by encouraging housing close to jobs, schools, services, parks, and public transportation.
-
Make it easier to build garden suites and coach houses by introducing pre-approved designs and reducing unnecessary red tape while maintaining neighbourhood character.
-
Support non-profit and affordable housing providers by fast-tracking applications, making municipal land available where appropriate, and considering Development Cost Charge and other fee reductions.
-
Work with housing providers, builders, and community organizations to expand housing choices for families, seniors, renters, and first-time homebuyers.
